FAQ

What is a Humanist Ceremony?

A Humanist Wedding Ceremony is a non-religious, unique wedding ceremony that gives you the opportunity to marry where you want, when you want and how you want. It puts the couple at its very heart and helps them set the tone that’s right for them, whether that’s traditional, modern, fun, quirky and/or anything in between and can include anyone they chose, including fur-babies!

How much will a ceremony cost?

MY fee for writing, conducting and delivering your ceremony is typically £500 in 2022 and £550 in 2023. This is depending on what you want to include. I can guarantee that once a price is agreed there will be no hidden charges. I am fully insured and trained and accredited by Humanists UK.

Please bear in mind there are two other costs to consider outside of my fee. - Currently £44 per couple payable to the General Register Office of Northern Ireland for pre-wedding approvals and check and issuing of Marriage Schedule (this is payable no matter what kind of wedding you have) - A processing fee of £40 per couple, payable direct to Humanists UK, this will include one year’s membership to Humanists UK.

Do we have to be Humanist to have a Humanist Ceremony?

Definitely not, just a wish to celebrate in a non-religious way. Humanists tend to look to science and reason to make sense of the world rather than an over ruling deity. They believe in compassion, empathy, kindness and equality. So if that describes you, you might be more Humanist than you thought!

Will our Humanist Ceremony be legal?

You better believe it! Humanist Ceremonies became legal in Northern Ireland in August 2018 thanks to the work of Humanists UK. Its thanks to that continuing work that same-sex ceremonies became legal in October 2019. Currently celebrants trained and accredited by Humanists UK are the only Humanist celebrants registered to carry out legal ceremonies in Northern Ireland.

What’s the difference between a Humanist Ceremony and a Registry Office Ceremony?

Both ceremonies are non-religious but that’s about the only similarity. A Humanist Ceremony is for couples who are looking for a more flexible and personal ceremony than a register office. Humanist Ceremonies do not follow a template or a rule book (there isn’t one!) Instead every ceremony is written entirely from scratch and puts the couple at the very heart of it. It allows couples to be as traditional, fun and/or as quirky as they want, write their own vows/promises and include whatever and whoever they want, including fur-babies!

Will you marry same-sex couples?

Of course! Humanist ceremonies are inclusive and I am keen to work with people of all identities. Everyone is welcome: you don’t need to ask here.

How long does a Humanist Ceremony last?

Where can we have our ceremony?

The short answer is anywhere! Thanks to a recent change in the law in Northern Ireland I can legally marry you just about anywhere, including the great outdoors. You can get creative and hold your ceremony off the beaten track, in your garden or somewhere that holds special meaning to you both. You will have to ensure you seek any necessary permissions and enquire with individuals/landowners about charges.
